Chasing wild ice is one of my greatest thrills. Every year I wait in anticipation for the first great flash freeze in the middle of the night, bringing with it some of the first perfect-surface ice to skate on;  and only the beginning of the icy blankets that cover the majestic lakes for the long winter slumber.
